Dale Steiner, History, is the CSU, Chico Outstanding Teacher of 1997-98. Steiner was chosen for his exemplary teaching and research in the area of immigration. Steiner’s book Of Thee We Sing: Immigrants and American History documents his current research. He is in his second term as co-director of the Northstate History-Social Science Project.

Bill Martin, Liberal Studies and Sociology, and Michael Kotar, Education, received a five-year $300,000 grant from the California Department of Education to build Integrated Teacher CORE, a student-centered learning community for elementary student teachers who complete 34 units while working on weekly service projects in local schools.

Lee Altier, Agriculture, was awarded two major research grants from USDA National Laboratories for his research on Riparian Buffer Zones and Ecosystems Modeling. Altier, a leading agroecologist, is the only American scientist working with an eight-member European research team on a project to restore agricultural environments.
