Civil Engineering students win regional competition.

In four of the past six years, CSU, Chico's student newspaper, The Orion, won the Associated Collegiate Press's prestigious national Pacemaker award -- a feat unsurpassed by any other college newspaper. The association also named The Orion National Newspaper of the Year in 1998 and 1999. The Orion placed first in the California Newspaper Publishers Association's Better Newspapers Contest for four-year college newspapers, the fourth time in five years.

Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing students excel in competitions:

* Chico won the American Society of Mechanical Engineers' 1999 Regional Student Design Competition with a rock-retrieving extraterrestrial vehicle similar to "Sojourner," which NASA used to test rocks on Mars.
* At the Western Region of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers 1999 National Collegiate Human Powered Vehicle Competition, Chico students won the road race event and the Judges Award for sportsmanship.
* At the 1999 WESTEC Manufacturing Challenge, sponsored by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, Chico students placed second with a wafer-manipulation robot designed to increase the production of silicon wafers seven-fold.
