CSU, Chico's student newspaper The Orion was named best nondaily college newspaper in the nation in 2000 by the National Newspaper Association. It received its fifth national Pacemaker award in seven years. The Orion also won the Associated Collegiate Press' National Newspaper award for 1999-2000. Electrical engineering
students Civil engineering students captured a first-place intercollegiate design award for the third time in the last four years at the Structural Engineers Association of Central California structural design contest in November 1999. Civil engineering students also placed first in the National Steel Bridge competition held at Texas A&M in May 2000. CSU, Chico won the regional competition, sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction and the American Society for Civil Engineers, for the fourth consecutive year. Chico's Opera Workshop, under the direction of Ying Yeh, formerly China's premier opera diva, toured and performed at Chinese music conservatories and at the American Embassy in Beijing in November 1999. Forensics team member Brenda McChesney was named to the All-American Debate Squad, and teammate Alia Khan was named an Academic All-American.
