Grants

The Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement Program received more than $100,000 in scholarship money from the National Science Foundation. CSU, Chico is part of an international consortium that received a $209,000 grant from the Fund for the Improvement of Secondary Education. The partners, from Mexico, Canada, and the U.S., will develop and deliver Internet courses to prepare engineers for an international business climate.

The Archaeological Research Program, under the direction of Greg White, received $99,000 to provide archaeological survey services for the Highway 70 Oroville-Marysville bypass project. Undergraduate and graduate students will assist in research. The research program also launched the first year of a multiyear study of the Lassen Volcanic National Park, supported by a $150, 000 grant from the National Park Service.

The Archaeological Research Summer field school at the Payne's Creek dig, where the deepest rock shelter discovery in Northern California was made by student researchers in 1999, received a $50,000 Bureau of Land Management grant.

Jennifer Rotnem, College of Natural Sciences, received $48,086 from the California Department of Fish and Game for field studies at Manton Plains, Dales Lake Ecological Reserve, and Hog Lake Plateau to analyze data on the effects of grazing on vernal pool habitats.

The Department of Chemistry received a $95,000 federal grant for a high field superconducting nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer.

CSU, Chico's School of Nursing received a $100,000 award from Sierra Health Foundation. Eight Northern California nursing students will receive $2,500 merit awards for each of five semesters. Nursing also received $200,000 from Enloe Medical Center to expand the number of registered nurses in its program.
