THE SCHOOL OF NURSING'S online bachelor of science program has received more than 240 applications from registered nurses since the program’s inception in spring 2000, and 60 RNs have taken one or more courses in its first year. The program allows RNs to earn Public Health Nursing certification. The online program makes completing a degree feasible for the 50 percent of Chico’s nursing students who live in rural areas.

A FAMILY NURSE PRACTIONER program will be launched
this fall, in collaboration with Sonoma State. There is a high demand for nurse practitioners, and one-third of Chico’s graduates desire a nurse practitioner license.

PROFESSOR CINDY WOLFF nutrition and food sciences, was awarded the Outstanding Dietetics Educator Award for 2001 for her innovative uses of technology and creative teaching strategies.

PROFESSOR XUELI ZOU physics, received a grant of
$500,000 from the National Science Foundation to provide Investigative Science Learning Environment courses, which promote active student participation in physics classes.

THE SCHOOL OF NUTRITION AND FOODS SCIENCES received a $40,000 grant from the Butte County Commission on Children and Families to develop an obesity prevention and treatment program for children in low-income families.

WE WIN! CARY COBURN a graduate student working with Professor John Mahoney, biological sciences, received first place for his research paper in the CSU systemwide Student Research Competition in the Biological and Agricultural Sciences Graduate Student category.
