Researchers
Spring 2002 graduates in animal science, Allison Adams and
Stacey DePaul, won first and second place, respectively, in
their divisions in the statewide CSU Undergraduate Research
Competition. Adams won first in the Molecular/Cellular division
for her two-year research into the effects of aging sperm
on gender selection in embryos. DePaul won second place for
her research on the effect of hylaronic acid on embryo development.
Dean Named to State Board
Charlie Crabb, dean of the College of Agriculture, was appointed
by Governor Davis as a member of the California State Board
of Food and Agriculture. Crabb is an author and expert in
the field of crop damage and pest management.
Teacher of Teachers
In June 2001, Wes Patton received the National
Association of Agricultural Educators “Teacher of Teachers”
Silver Award at the California Agriculture Teachers Association
Annual Convention.
Fulbright Scholar in Thailand
Lee Altier was the recipient of a Fulbright
Senior Scholars Fellowship for 20012002. Altier taught, researched,
and consulted in Thailand, focusing on production management
practices and their potential impact on water quality.
Fine Wine Educator
Wine educator Marian Baldy received the
prestigious Award of Merit from the American Wine Society
Board of Directors. Other wine professionals to receive this
award include Robert Mondavi, Louis Martine, Charles Fournier,
and Vincent Petrucci.
Pick of the Crop
Lal Singh, agricultural economics, received
$245,000 from the California Olive Committee for research
and improvement of the Korvan machine to harvest olives. Singh
and Ron Borge, agriculture, teamed with Joel
Arthur, civil engineering, and Ramesh Varahamurti,
mechanical engineering and manufacturing, to conduct an economic
analysis and mechanical performance evaluation of olive harvesters. |
