Leading
the Way for Teachers
CSU, Chico is the only CSU campus to participate in all
nine of the California Subject Matter Projects, a statewide
professional development program for educators. For example,
Resources for International Studies in Education helps K12
teachers enliven international studies education through a
resource library of 3,000 books of children's literature and
teacher resources, plus tubs of artifacts, maps, games, and
instruments. The other projects are Foreign Language, History-Social
Science, Mathematics, Physical Education-Health, Reading and
Literature, Science, Writing, and Arts.
Students Awarded Big-City Internships
The Orion sports editor Melody Gutierrez was one of 10 students
selected nationally for the Sports Journalism Institute, which
included a paid summer internship as a sports reporter at
the Houston Chronicle and a $500 scholarship. This is the
second time in three years that a CSU, Chico student was selected.
Education major Carolyn Marie Lucas received a $1,000 Chips
Quinn Scholars Program for Diversity in Journalism award,
one of only 100 nationwide, which included a summer reporting
internship at the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek, California.

Special Education Teacher Preparation Program Awarded
Special education credential students benefit from CSU,
Chico's unique teacher training program that integrates course
work and student teaching. The Concurrent Teacher Preparation
Program in the Department of Professional Studies in Education
received a Quality Education Partnership Award from the California
Council on Teacher Education for its exemplary efforts placing
students in a variety of educational settings with students
from diverse backgrounds. The program simultaneously prepares
students to receive their multiple subject teaching credential
and special education credential. Graduates often receive
multiple job offers.
Preparing
Teachers for Special Education
The Department of Professional Studies in Education received
two federal grants totaling $2.3 million to support special
education teaching, including preparing teachers to serve
children with severe disabilities in rural areas.
Student Teams Create Prize-Winning Web Sites
Business major Charlie Thao and international relations
major Elston Joe taught a group of Upward Bound high school
students how to build educational Web sites. Three sites won
first-place awards in the 2002 TRIO ThinkQuest competition.
Several other CSU, Chico students participated as “coaches,”
including helping a team with Spanish translation and incorporating
animated pages. The contest is part of the partnership between
the U.S. Department of Education and ThinkQuest, an Internet-based
education program.
