At the regional American College and Theatre Festival in Reno in February 2002, theatre music major Maurice “Spencer” Teilmann was a finalist in sound design and a finalist in the critic's workshop, qualifying him for the national competition in Washington, D.C. Three theatre students won lead roles in professionally directed plays performed at the same competition.

Creative Writing Student's Novel Published

M.F.A. in creative writing consortium student Jacqueline Jones LaMon had her first novel, In the Arms of One Who Loves Me, published by Ballantine/One World in June 2002.

Art Students Study in Florence

Amanda Riner, a printmaker, and Carl “Klutch” Stanaway, a sculptor, received two of 22 openings for the CSU Summer Arts two-week intensive-study program in Florence for summer 2002.

German Teacher Honored for Achievement

Magda Mueller, director of the German Studies Program, is one of nine recipients of a national award given annually by the American Association of Teachers of German and the Goethe-Institute New York for outstanding achievement in furthering the teaching of German in the United States. The quality of the German program at CSU, Chico is evidenced by the acceptance of its graduates at top-notch graduate schools.

English Graduate Student Writes Winner

Hilary Owens, English graduate student in rhetoric and composition, was one of 10 winners of the “Scholars for the Dream” travel award at the Conference on College Composition and Communications in Chicago in March 2002. Owens' research paper bested 40 others, most written by Ph.D.s or Ph.D. candidates. Owens was also named a 2002­2003 Predoctoral Scholar by the CSU. Rosalina Morish, English, and Melissa Cafferata, Russian/Soviet history, were also named Predoctoral Scholars. All three students will receive funding support.

Four CSU, Chico music students were chosen for membership in the 73-piece Western Collegiate Honor Band. Nick Froehlich, trumpet; Casson Scowcroft, trombone; Nora Thomas, clarinet; and Matt Hunter, tuba, competed with 355 students from other universities for the honor.

Music Teacher in the Making

Nora Thomas, music, was awarded a full summer scholarship to the Kodaly Summer Institute at McNeese State University in Louisiana, where she will continue her studies in elementary music education.
