No college weekly has won more prestigious awards in the past decade than The Orion, CSU, Chico's student newspaper. The Orion received the Newspaper of the Year award from the Associated Collegiate Press in March 2002 for the second straight year and the fourth time in five years. In June, The Orion received the first-place award for general excellence in the 2001 Better Newspapers Contest held by the California Newspaper Publishers Association. This marks the fourth straight time and seventh time in eight years that The Orion has won the top award in CNPA's University Division. The Orion also won a Freedom of Information Award from the Society of Professional Journalists in February for a story on obtaining public records from local agencies.Above, Melody Gutierrez and Jen Cooper look over photos to accompany a story.
