Marketing majors Adam Gerlinger and Brandon LaShure won second place and third place, respectively, in the sales presentation competition at the American Marketing Association (AMA) International Collegiate Conference in New Orleans in March. The CSU, Chico chapter of the AMA won awards for planning, fund-raising, and community services, and was chosen to present its alcohol awareness program at the conference. The students' program was one of three selected from more than 200 colleges.

Superior Merit

The Human Resource Management Association at CSU, Chico earned a Superior Merit Award from the international Society for Human Resource Management for its professional development programs and other activities. Professor Bill Bergman is the association's adviser.

Undergrad Becomes SAP Consultant

Management information systems major Charles Stephens is the first undergraduate in the nation and internationally to become a consultant trained in software designed by the German company SAP, the largest enterprise software company in the world. Stephens will become one of a very few strategic enterprise management experts. CSU, Chico is the leading United States university partner to SAP.

Students Innovate on the Web

Students in Professor Lorraine Gardiner's management information systems classes developed an innovative, Web-based student evaluation and portfolio system for the College of Business. The system allows anonymous assessment of student course work by external evaluators, such as industry partners. Student progress on key subjects can be tracked as well. The system also allows students to create e-portfolios to showcase their capabilities.

New Business Information Systems Degree

The College of Business now offers a degree in business information systems (BIS), the first in California, with an emphasis on new technology and its business application. The BIS curriculum was designed in consultation with leading industry executives to prepare students for positions in the most rapidly growing and highly paid areas of business. BIS students benefit from innovative partnerships with companies such as Hewlett-Packard, Cisco Systems, and SAP.

New German Exchange Program

The College of Business has established a student exchange program with Pforzheim University in Germany. Top business students from Pforzheim may attend CSU, Chico and receive training in SAP's software. Likewise, CSU, Chico students may attend business classes at Pforzheim, as well as intensive German language classes.

In April, marketing students in a specially designed class taught by Bill McGowan created an agency to promote the new Honda Element as part of a national educational program sponsored by Honda. The students researched, implemented, and evaluated a promotional campaign for the vehicle. They also made a formal presentation to Honda representatives. The project gave students the opportunity to learn the “ins and outs” of real-world marketing.
