Marketing
Students Win
Marketing majors Adam Gerlinger and
Brandon LaShure won second place and third place,
respectively, in the sales presentation competition at the
American Marketing Association (AMA) International Collegiate
Conference in New Orleans in March. The CSU, Chico chapter
of the AMA won awards for planning, fund-raising, and community
services, and was chosen to present its alcohol awareness
program at the conference. The students' program was one of
three selected from more than 200 colleges.
Superior Merit
The
Human Resource Management Association at CSU, Chico earned
a Superior Merit Award from the international Society for
Human Resource Management for its professional development
programs and other activities. Professor Bill Bergman
is the association's adviser.
Undergrad Becomes SAP Consultant
Management information systems major Charles Stephens
is the first undergraduate in the nation and internationally
to become a consultant trained in software designed by the
German company SAP, the largest enterprise software company
in the world. Stephens will become one of a very few strategic
enterprise management experts. CSU, Chico is the leading United
States university partner to SAP.
Students Innovate on the Web
Students in Professor Lorraine Gardiner's
management information systems classes developed an innovative,
Web-based student evaluation and portfolio system for the
College
of Business. The system allows anonymous assessment of
student course work by external evaluators, such as industry
partners. Student progress on key subjects can be tracked
as well. The system also allows students to create e-portfolios
to showcase their capabilities.
New Business Information Systems Degree
The
College of Business now offers a degree in business
information systems (BIS), the first in California, with
an emphasis on new technology and its business application.
The BIS curriculum was designed in consultation with leading
industry executives to prepare students for positions in the
most rapidly growing and highly paid areas of business. BIS
students benefit from innovative partnerships with companies
such as Hewlett-Packard, Cisco Systems, and SAP.
New German Exchange Program
The
College of Business has established a student exchange
program with Pforzheim University in Germany. Top business
students from Pforzheim may attend CSU, Chico and receive
training in SAP's software. Likewise, CSU, Chico students
may attend business classes at Pforzheim, as well as intensive
German language classes.
Real-World
Marketing
In April, marketing students in a specially designed class
taught by Bill McGowan created an agency
to promote the new Honda Element as part of a national educational
program sponsored by Honda. The students researched, implemented,
and evaluated a promotional campaign for the vehicle. They
also made a formal presentation to Honda representatives.
The project gave students the opportunity to learn the “ins
and outs” of real-world marketing.
