Foundation “Top Ten” scholarship. The $10,000
prize will fund her senior year at CSU, Chico. She was also

Graphic design seniors Deedra Cobb and
Jessie Gardner earned awards in the Michigan
State University Design Contest for college students in May
2003. Cobb, assistant advertising design manager, took first
place in the advertisement category. Gardner, sports designer,
took second place in the sports page category.
Service-Learning Web Site for Teachers
Professor Teresa Davis, professional
studies in education, developed a Web site for the California
State University system to introduce service-learning pedagogy
to future K-12 teachers. She is also on a national committee
to organize the International Center for Service Learning
at Clemson University and was recognized at the national conference
of the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education
in 2003 for creating one of six national models for service-learning
pedagogy in teacher preparation.
Film Script Is Tops
In April 2003, Communication design and media arts junior
Mickey Adolph Jr. won Best of Festival and first
place in the Short Film Scriptwriting division with Richard's
Doll in the student scriptwriting competition at the
Broadcast Education Association's International Festival of
Film, Video, and Media Arts.
High Altitude Award
Exercise physiology student Dawn Howe received
the White Mountain Research Station Trainee Award at the International
Hypoxia Symposium in February 2003. The symposium focuses
on physiology and medical issues of altitude up to 29,000
feet.
Public Relations Group Is Textbook Material
Tehama
Group Communications, CSU, Chico's student-managed public
relations agency, won awards for newsletter production and
news release writing from the Sacramento chapter of the International
Association of Business Communicators in May 2003. The group
will be profiled in the next edition of The Practice of
Public Relations, the first time a student-managed agency
has appeared in the nationally recognized textbook.
Special Education Receives Support
Professors Lisa Churchill and Michelle
Cepello received $200,000 from the U.S. Department
of Education Office of Special and Rehabilitative Services
to support their project to prepare 100 special education
teachers to work in high poverty rural schools.
Students Win with Cool Ads
In March 2003, communication professor Dolores Blalock's
design students won three gold and eight silver Addy Awards
in an advertising copywriting competition sponsored by the
Sacramento Advertising Club.
Two
Mentoring Programs Help High School Students
The
Center for Multicultural and Gender Studies initiated
a Mentoring for Young Men of Color program in 2001 that partners
CSU, Chico and Butte College students with local high school
students for weekly meetings to encourage college enrollment.
Teaching credential candidates in the Department of Education
team with local high school students who need help with reading.
The program is funded by a three-year, $250,000 federal grant
from the Office of the Secretary of Education. Marcus

be a high school English teacher, tutors Chico High School
students.
Art Education Web Site Earns National Recognition
Education professor Cris Guenter received
a 2002 MERLOT classics award for the Web site “K-6
Arts Lessons Plans.” The site for student teachers
was chosen by the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning
and Online Teaching.
Student Designs New Logo for Museum Association
Communication design senior Melissa Welliver
won a competition to create a new logo and design system for
the Association of College and University Museums and Galleries
in May 2003.
