Ability First Sports Camp

Ability First Campers Learn from World-Class Paralympic Athletes

Recreation and Parks Management sponsors a residential camp for youth with physical disabilities that emphasizes both sport skill development and socialization. Students are hired as staff and volunteer at the Ability First week-long camp. Co-director Laura McLachlin, a professor of therapeutic recreation, was invited to the International Paralympics in Italy in 2006 as a distinguished guest of the International Paralympic Committee as a result of her work directing Ability First.

The Orion student newspaperThe Orion Is among Best in Nation

The Orion took first place for general excellence for the ninth time in the California Newspaper Publishers Association’s 2006 Better Newspapers Contest in July. The publication also received its fourth straight national newspaper Pacemaker award and 10th Pacemaker overall from the Associated Collegiate Press in October 2006. Sharon Yep, fall 2006 managing editor of The Orion, received a $10,000 Scripps Howard Foundation Top Ten Scholar award. Brad Bodenham, a designer for The Orion, took first place in design at the National College Media Convention for his house ad about the newspaper. Dave Waddell, advisor to The Orion, won the 2006 Distinguished Advisor Award for a four-year university or college from College Media Advisers, Inc.

Faculty Fellow for Service-Learning Program

Lynne Bercaw, Education, is one of 25 faculty members from public and private universities statewide selected as faculty fellows for the California Campus Compact Carnegie Foundation Service-Learning for Political Engagement Program.

Educator Exhibits Art

Cris Guenter, Education, exhibited her painting Upper Park Road in the 2006 National Art Education Electronic Gallery at the Chicago Hilton & Towers.

Sports Drink Research

Jack Azevedo, Kinesiology, received $99,334 from CytoSport to test blood differences when drinking Cytomax and Gatorade sports drinks.

New Publications

W. Scott Barker, Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreational Sports, co-authored The Mueller Sport Care Instructional DVD: Taping and Bracing (Mueller Sports Medicine, 2006) and Assessing Blood Pressure: A Merlot Learning Object (MERLOT, 2006).

Victoria L. Bernhardt, Professional Studies in Education, published Translating Data into Information to Improve Teaching and Learning (Eye on Education, 2007).

Jennifer Meadows, Communication Design, co-edited Communication Technology Update, 10th Edition (Focal Press/Elsevier, 2006).
