The King and I

Theatre Students Compete in Festival

Students Allison Rich and Katie Francis, Theatre Arts, were chosen to compete in the Irene Ryan regional competition in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival in Cedar City, Utah, in February 2007 based on their work in Urinetown, a campus musical presented in October 2006.

Linguist Honored as Outstanding Professor

Graham Thurgood, English, was named Outstanding Professor for 2006–2007, the premier award for scholarship and outstanding teaching. He is a distinguished scholar in his field of Southeast Asian linguistics.

New Publications

Rob Burton, English, published Artists of the Floating World: Contemporary Writers Between Cultures (University Press of America, 2006).

Ellen Eggers, English, published The Historical Dictionary of Burundi (Scarecrow Press, 2006).

Pilar Alvarez-Rubio, Foreign Languages and Literatures, published Metáforas de la casa en la construcción de identitad nacional: 5 miradas a Donoso, Eltit, Allende y Shármeta (Editorial Cuarto Propio, 2007).

Troy JollimorePhilosopher’s Poetry Wins National Award

Troy Jollimore (photo at left), Philosophy, won the 2006 National Book Critics Circle Award for Poetry for his Tom Thompson in Purgatory (Margie/Intuit House Poetry Series, 2006).

Professor of Japanese Named Outstanding Teacher

Kimihiko Nomura, Foreign Languages and Literatures, was chosen as the Outstanding Teacher of 2006-2007. He was instrumental in developing a minor in Japanese in 2006.

Historian Receives Prestigious Fellowship

Laird Easton, History, received a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for 2007–2008 to complete his translation of The Diaries of Count Harry Kessler, 1880–1918 from the original German to English, currently under publishing contract with Alfred A. Knopf.

Essay Wins Prize

George Keithley, professor emeritus, English, won the Monroe K. Spears Prize for best essay published in 2006 for “Redbud and Remembrance,” in The Sewanee Review.

Academic Advisor Recognized

Maria Gonzalez, Foreign Languages and Literatures, was chosen as Outstanding Academic Advisor for 2006–2007. Gonzalez advises Spanish majors and travel-abroad students on campus. She also works with migrant-worker parents to encourage higher education for their children.
