School of Nursing Expands Programs
The School of Nursing received a $250,000 grant from the California Employment Development Department to establish the Rural Northern California Clinical Simulation Center, a facility of Enloe Medical Center, to train nurses using lifelike, state-of-the art patient simulators. In addition, a new two-year program funded by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development, will allow licensed vocational nurses to earn bachelor’s degrees and become registered nurses.
Biologist Helps Conserve Mexican Mangrove
Professor Michael P. Marchetti, Biological Sciences, is part of an international research team to conserve mangrove systems on the central Pacific coast of La Manzanilla, Jalisco, Mexico. He is a co-director of the aquatic ecology and fisheries teams.
Physics Student Receives Leadership Award
Tiara Norris, a senior majoring in physics, received a 2006–2007 Leadership Award in the amount of $2,000 from the Society of Physics Students. She works at the Kiwanis Chico Community Observatory.
Ornithologist Publishes Study of Avian World
Roger Lederer, professor emeritus, Biological Sciences, published Amazing Birds: A Treasury of Facts and Trivia about the Avian World (Barron’s, 2006).
Author of Climate Change Report
Jeff Price, Geological and Environmental Sciences, is one of the lead authors of the Intergovernmental Panel Climate Change report Climate Change 2007: Climate Change Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability. He specifically covered biodiversity, adaptation and mitigation, and valuing ecosystems.
New Degree Offered in Environmental Sciences
CSU, Chico is one of 12 CSU campuses to offer a new two-year Professional Science Master’s degree, and the only one to have a program in environmental sciences.
Studying an Active Volcano
Professor Rachel Teasdale’s geological and environmental sciences students spent part of spring break on the Big Island of Hawaii studying volcanic processes at Kilauea Volcano. They visited the active vent Pu’u O’o and examined older volcanic deposits. They toured the Hawaii Volcanoes Observatory and the Onizuka Center for International Astronomy on Mauna Kea.
Mathematician Receives Teaching Award
William B. Fisher, director of the Center for Mathematics and Science Education, received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Mathematical Association of America in February 2007.
Outstanding Academic Achievement
Kham Vang, a biological sciences major, received the 2007 President’s Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. The $1,000 award is granted to the graduating senior with the highest grade point average. Vang, who hopes to become a dentist, scored in the 97th percentile on his dental school entrance examination.
