A Leader in Sustainability |
| CSU, Chico is an environmental leader within the CSU system with its commitment to being a university that is dedicated to sustainability and educating students who are environmentally literate and responsible. Below are a few of the awards and practices that contribute to Chico’s leading role:
- CSU, Chico received the Grand Prize in the National Wildlife Federation’s Campus Ecology Chill Out contest for its “lead by example” model of innovative programs to reduce global warming.

In December 2006, CSU, Chico became one of the first of six campuses in the nation to sign the American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment, an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become “climate neutral” in environmental impact.

Conservationist Jack Rawlins established the Rawlins Endowed Professorship of Environmental Literacy, currently held by biology Professor James Pushnik, and the $10,000 Jack Rawlins Environmental Award, won by student Taylor Bass.

Students, faculty, and staff are working on the annual This Way to Sustainability Conference, which last year had more than 900 participants.
- The Institute for Sustainable Development was created to integrate campus environmental efforts and to increase research related to our biosystem.
- The Associated Students Sustainability Program is funded by a fee increase sponsored by student leaders.

Chico, founded in 1887, is a residential campus located in
Northern California. With Little Chico Creek winding through
the center of campus, CSU, Chico is known for its beauty.
One measure of the quality of a university is the opinion
recent graduates have of their alma mater. In the most recent
Spring Graduate Survey, 97 percent of baccalaureate graduates
reported they were satisfied with the value of their education
at CSU, Chico, and 98 percent indicated they were satisfied
with CSU, Chico as a whole.
