OUTSTANDING STUDENT LEADER

Fumiko Motohashi (BA International Relations, ’08) was chosen as an Outstanding Student Leader in International Relations. As a participant in the Model UN program, she won the Distinguished Delegation Award at the American West Conference in fall 2007. She served as president of the International Neighbors Club and chairperson of the task group on integrating international students into campus and community. Her work with the Alliance to Save Energy’s Green Campus Program was key to the Best Practices award the Chico program received in spring 2008 from the Office of the Chancellor for the CSU.

A World Platform

Susan Place, dean of the School of Graduate, International, and Interdisciplinary Studies (GIIS), presented a plenary address on “Contributions of Geography to Sustainable Development” at the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the School of Geography at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica, in Heredia, Costa Rica, in July 2008.

GRANTS SUPPORT LANGUAGE INSTRUCTORS From Egypt and China

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature and GIIS received a Fulbright grant for a foreign language instructor from Mansoura University in Egypt to teach Arabic 101 and 102 during the 2008–2009 academic year. Funding was also received from the Chinese government and Huazhong Normal University for a Chinese language and culture instructor for three years beginning in 2008–2009.
