CSU, Chico is an environmental leader

Green initiatives are supported by the Institute for Sustainable Development, the Rawlins Chair of Environmental Literacy, and the Associated Students Sustainability Program. Below are highlights of Chico’s environmental dedication:

  • The new Student Services Center is LEED Gold certified by the U.S. Green Building Council.
  • The DailyGreen, “consumer’s guide to the green revolution,” featured CSU, Chico in a list of 10 top green colleges and universities that includes Harvard University, Duke University, Middlebury College, and Oberlin College at
  • Students, faculty, and staff are working on the fourth annual This Way to Sustainability Conference, which drew 1,100 participants last year.
  • In its ninth year, Diversion Excursion diverted 17,595 pounds of recyclable and reusable goods from campus residence halls.
  • The Alliance to Save Energy’s Green Campus Program received $50,000 in 2008 for installing energy management software in campus computer labs.
  • Recent winners of the $6,000 Jack Rawlins Environmental Award include The Cause, a sustainable student residence, and Melissa Dalzell, who installed solar cookers at a children’s home in Kenya.
  • University Printing Services received Forest Stewardship Council chain-of-custody certification.

California State University, Chico, founded in 1887, is a residential campus located in Northern California. With Little Chico Creek winding through the center of campus, CSU, Chico is known for its beauty. One measure of the quality of a university is the opinion recent graduates have of their alma mater. In the most recent Spring Graduate Survey, 97 percent of baccalaureate graduates reported they were satisfied with the value of their education at CSU, Chico, and 98 percent indicated they were satisfied with CSU, Chico as a whole.
