Professor Runs Global Entrepreneurship Competition for Students

Curtis DeBerg, Accounting, is founder and CEO of Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE), an international network linking innovative teenagers with mentors. SAGE programs are in 20 countries, including Bahrain, China, Pakistan, Russia, and Zambia. The 10th annual SAGE World Cup took place in San Francisco in July 2012, where high school teams from all over the world competed in social enterprise business and socially responsible business competitions.

College of Business Supports Budding Entrepreneurs

The Center for Entrepreneurship at CSU, Chico hosts an annual weeklong celebration of entrepreneurship called eWeek, including business competitions, entrepreneurial videos, and guest speakers and providing a platform for students to apply their entrepreneurial skills. The 2012 eWeek culminated in Chico JumpStart Weekend, bringing together CSU, Chico students, recent graduates, and community members to launch a business in one and a half days.

Professor Receives Sustainability Award

Angela Casler, Management, was the recipient of the 2012 Paul Maslin Environmental Stewardship Award. She has dedicated herself to class projects that identify small, cost-effective solutions to increase the sustainable practices of small businesses in Chico.

College of Business Ranked in Top 10 Internationally

The College of Business is now ranked ninth among universities with “Excellent Business Programs” that have strong national reputations and continental links. The schools were ranked by deans of 1,000 Best Business Schools selected by Eduniversal, a Paris-based educational consulting organization.

One-of-a-Kind Professional Sales Program

The College of Business offers a Professional Sales Program—the only one in the Western United States—that serves more than 200 students. The program provides a nationally recognized 21-credit certificate in professional sales. The curriculum includes an on-campus sales contest with corporate sponsors. The top 8 finalists compete in the Western States Collegiate Sales Competition, which Chico State won in 2012. (See Student Team section.)

Student Group Wins Greenie

Net Impact, the student organization related to the minor in Managing for Sustainability, won a Greenie Award for sustainable student organization at the seventh annual This Way to Sustainability Conference in 2012.


Shekhar Misra, Finance and Marketing, co-authored “Greening the Business Strategies” published in the proceedings of the International Conference on Sustainable Management Practices: Developments and Dimensions, held in Udaipur, India, in March 2012.

Kim Hinrichs, Management, co-authored “A Cross-Cultural Study of Motivation for Self-Employment: Comparing China, Mexico, and the U.S.” to be published in an upoming issue of the International Journal of Entrepreneurial Behaviour & Research.

H. Christine Hsu, Finance and Marketing, had “Global Risk Diversification: An Empirical Investigation from the U.S. Perspective” published in the International Business & Economics Research Journal, Vol. 8, No. 8 (2011).

The COB is a hosting center for more than 50 SAP partner institutions across the globe.
