2012 is the Quasquicentennial of
CSU, Chico.
The University has been making history for 125 YEARS!
Founded in 1887,
CSU, Chico is the second oldest CSU campus. It opened with 90 students
and five faculty. It has a number of “firsts,” including …
- The first university in the world to offer graduate
degrees via satellite
- The first computer science department in the CSU
- The first CSU campus to register a ”green” building
- The Associated Students recycling program was the first in the CSU
Continued Recognition as One of America’s Best Colleges
CSU, Chico moved up to fifth among master’s level public universities in the western United States in the “2013 America’s Best Colleges” from U.S. News & World Report magazine. Chico was ranked sixth for three years previously, and has been in the top 10 since 1998.
First-Year Experience
First Year Experience’s (FYE) Great Debate and Town Hall Meetings are unique in the CSU. The all-day Great Debate is a cooperative project between the City of Chico and CSU, Chico dedicated to the ideals of civility and respect in public discourse. FYE assists first-year students in their transition to university life.

Chico, founded in 1887, is a residential campus located in
Northern California. With Little Chico Creek winding through
the center of campus, CSU, Chico is known for its beauty.
One measure of the quality of a university is the opinion
recent graduates have of their alma mater. In the most recent
Spring Graduate Survey, 97 percent of baccalaureate graduates reported
they were satisfied with the value of their education at CSU,
Chico, and 98 percent indicated they were satisfied with CSU, Chico
as a whole.
