Publications

Peter Cruise, Health and Community Service, published “Are There Virtues in Whistle-Blowing? Perspectives from Health Care Organizations” in the Public Administration Quarterly, Vol. 25, No. 4, 2002. He also co-authored “Productivity and the Moral Manager,” published in Administration and Society, Vol. 34, No. 4, 2002; and co-authored “A 21st-Century Lens for Public Administration,” published in the Encyclopedia of Public Administration and Public Policy by Marcel-Dekker in 2003.

Frank Li, English, had “A Diachronic Examination of the Motivations for the Rise and Development of V-V Compounds in Chinese” published in Papers in Honor of P.J. Mistry by the Indian Institute of Language Studies in 2003.

Michelle Neyman, Biological Sciences, and Steve Shive, Health and Community Service, had “Energize Your Life! A Social Marketing Campaign to Increase Fruit Consumption Among Community College Students” published in Health Education and Behavior, Vol. 29, No. 4, 2002.

Hassan Sisay, History, updated the section on Liberia for the 2003 edition of The New Book of Knowledge, published by Grolier.

Ela Thurgood, English, had a review of Grazyna Demenko’s Analysis of Polish Suprasegmentals for Speech Technology published in Language, Vol. 78, No. 4, 2002.

Graham Thurgood, English, co-edited and contributed the overview article in The Sino-Tibetan Languages, published in the Routledge Language Family Series in 2003.

Charles Urbanowicz, Anthropology, had “There Is a Grandeur in This View of Life” published in Darwin Day Collection One: The Single Best Idea Ever by Tangled Bank Press in 2002.

Grants and Contracts

Carol Childers, Passages-Adult Resource Center, received $10,000 from The California Endowment to provide volunteer mileage reimbursement for the Senior Companion Program.

Chuck Nelson, Geography and Planning, received $9,600 from Sutter County to provide a technician who will support the county’s Community Services Department.

Awards and Activities

Renee Renner, Computer Science, received a $4,000 Women in International Scientific Cooperation travel grant award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science, supported under the National Science Foundation, to pursue collaborative efforts for modeling complex systems at the Institute of Computer Science, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

Adrienne Scott, Museum of Anthropology, was a judge at the science fairs at Chico Country Day School and Hooker Oak Elementary School in February. Select students will enter the Chico Science Fair in March.

Michael D. Scott, Communication Arts and Sciences, gave an invited presentation about his role in a National Cancer Institute-sponsored study and campaign designed to promote skin cancer awareness and risk reduction among high altitude outdoor workers at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, University of Washington, in January.

Charles Urbanowicz, Anthropology, presented “Teaching As Theatre Once Again: Darwin in the Classroom (and Beyond)” at the Hawaii International Conference on Arts and Humanities in Honolulu, Hawaii, in January.
