Kathryn Silliman, Biological Sciences, John Parry, nutritional science graduate student, and Larry Kirk, Chemistry, had “Pycnogenol Does Not Impact the Antioxidant or Vitamin C Status of Healthy Young Adults” published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Vol. 103, No. 1, 2003.

Ela Thurgood, English co-authored “Reduplication As Echo: Evidence from Bontok and Chumash,” published in Perspectives in Linguistics: Papers in Honor of P. J. Mistry by the Indian Institute of Language Studies in 2003.

Sara Trechter, English, had “A Marked Man: The Contexts of Gender and Ethnicity” published in The Handbook of Language and Gender, Handbooks in Linguistics Series by Blackwell Publishers. She also had a review of Marianne Mithun’s The Languages of Native North America published in Diachronica, Vol. 19, No. 1, 2002.

Tom Wilder and Harish Bahl, Accounting and Management Information Systems, had “The State of Fundamental Office Tool Skills Among Business Students” published in the California Journal of Operations Management, Vol. 1, No. 1.

Grants and Contracts

Renee Renner, Computer Science, received $4,000 from the National Science Foundation to provide travel funds for her to collaborate with a colleague in the Czech Republic to formulate a heterogeneous agent architecture for modeling complex systems.

Cindy Wolff, Biological Sciences, received $177,025 from the California Department of Health Services to support Overweight Prevention and Treatment for Fit Kids and promote expansion of services to additional counties.

Awards and Activities

Roy Crosbie, Electrical and Computer Engineering, gave the keynote address, “High-Speed Real-Time Simulation,” at the sixth International Conference on Computer Simulation and Industrial Applications in Tijuana, Mexico, in February. His lecture was based on research funded by the Office of Naval Research.

Graham Thurgood, English, presented “The Causatives in Sun Hongkai’s Anong: Language, Death, and Rapid Restructuring” at the 29th annual meeting of the Berkeley Linguistics Society at UC Berkeley in February.

Randy Wonzong, Theatre Arts, received an Excellence in Education award from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, the national organization for theatre education in American universities, at the United States Regional Festival in Logan, Utah, in February. The award is based on work as a theatre artist and involvement in American College Theatre Festival activities.
