Nolan MacLean, vice president of scholarships and awards for DSP, said the group chose to donate to the class because “it is critical that today’s business leaders are versed in cultural and financial diversity.”

Travis Williams memorial tree

A Japanese snowbell tree was dedicated in memory of Travis Williams at a gathering of family and close friends Sept. 22. The Sociological Association of Chico State helped Travis’s friends and roommates raise funds for the memorial tree on South Lawn outside of Butte Hall. Travis’s mother, Margie Everett, also contributed to the efforts. Williams died Dec. 8, 2005, after being severely beaten while breaking up a fight at the Holiday Inn in Chico, where he worked. The plaque beneath the tree reads, “In Memory of Sociology Major Travis Williams (1982–2005) His smile, kindness, spirituality and love touched the hearts of many.”
