Book in Common Events Planned

This year’s Book in Common is Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, about Dr. Paul Farmer, an infectious disease specialist dedicated to bringing care to communities with little or no access to modern medicine. He has worked in Haiti, Peru, Cuba, and Russia and is the co-founder of Partners in Health, which provides community health services in Haiti and five other countries.

In The New York Times, reviewer Abraham Verghese wrote, “Mountains Beyond Mountains is inspiring, disturbing, daring and completely absorbing. It will rattle our complacency; it will prick our conscience.”

A “Haitian marketplace” of student work inspired by the Book in Common will be exhibited Dec. 5–6 at Selvester’s Café. The market “is part of an ongoing project in First Year Experience to help students tie their research projects to events in the public sphere,” said Thia Wolf, FYE director. It will be open to the public from 9 am–5 pm both days.

Other Book in Common events on campus will include CAPE forums addressing health care and altruism. For more information and updated event listings, go to the Book in Common home page, www.csuchico.edu/bic.
