Environmentalist Hawken Opens On the Creek Series

“Paul Hawken’s book Blessed Unrest will inspire and encourage millions to take more action.”— Jane Goodall

Paul Hawken will deliver the first On the Creek lecture for the fall on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 pm in Laxson Auditorium. Hawken is an environmentalist, entrepreneur, journalist, and author.

From the age of 20, he has dedicated his life to sustainability. His practice has included starting and running ecological businesses (including co-founding Smith & Hawken), writing and teaching about the impact of commerce on living systems, and consulting with governments and corporations on economic development, industrial ecology, and environmental policy.

Hawken’s most recent book is Blessed Unrest: How the Largest Movement in the World Came into Being and Why No One Saw It Coming. The book praises what is going right in this world and how small, grassroots organizations, as well as large corporations, are banding together to help save the environment.

He is author and co-author of dozens of articles, as well as six books including The Next Economy (Ballantine, 1983), Growing a Business (Simon & Schuster, 1987), and The Ecology of Commerce (HarperCollins, 1993). The Ecology of Commerce was voted in 1998 as the No. 1 college text on business and the environment by professors in 67 business schools.

Advance tickets for Paul Hawken can be purchased at the University Box Office (x6333).
