Joe Greene, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and Manufacturing Technology, published “To Degrade or Not to Degrade: Compostable Plastics Go Under the Microscope,” in Resource Recycling (May 2008) and “Degradation of Biodegradable, UV-Degradable, and Oxodegradable Plastics with In-Vessel Food Waste Composting Environment,” in Proceedings of the SPE GPEC 2008 Global Plastics Environmental Conference (March 2008) with Fengu Wang (Jepson Prairie Organics). Troy Jollimore, Philosophy, had his chapbook “The Solipsist” published by Bear Star Press, 2008. Janja Lalich, Sociology, had “Violent Outcomes of Ideological Extremism: What Have We Learned Since Jonestown?” published in The Jonestown Report, part of a Web site devoted to information about Jonestown and Peoples Temple. Michael Leitner, Recreation and Parks Management, wrote an article titled “The Value of the Israel Baseball League to Israel and to World Jewry” appearing in the November 2008 issue of The Jewish Magazine. Steve Lewis, History, had “Mexico’s National Indigenist Institute and the Negotiation of Applied Anthropology in Highland Chiapas, 1951–1954” published in Ethnohistory, Vol. 55, No. 4 and “Unmasking Chiapas: Recent Scholarship on Subcomandante Marco, Dissident Women, and Impotent Thugs” published in Latin American Perspectives, Vol. 35, No. 6. Ann Schulte, Education, had Seeking Integrity in Teacher Education: Transforming Preservice Teachers, Transforming My Self: Self Study of Teaching and Teacher Education Practices, Vol. 7 published by Springer, 2008. Wai-hung Wong, Philosophy, had “Meaningfulness and Identities” published in Ethical Theory and Moral Practice, Vol. 11, 2008. Awards and ActivitiesMichelle Cepello, Professional Studies in Education, was selected to serve on the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP) Advisory Panel, which will review and update the CSTP. Sara Cooper, Foreign Languages and Literatures, won the 2008 Women’s Caucus for the Modern Languages Florence Howe Essay Award for a work in a language/literature other than English for “Who Laughs Last? Re/Configurations of Family in Contemporary Cuban Comics.” She presented “El que no tiene de congo, tiene de carabalí: La representación de la negritud en la obra de Mirta Yáñez y Armando Mariño” (“Whoever Doesn’t Have Congo Blood Has Carabalí: Representation of Blackness in Works by Mirta Yáñez and Armando Mariño”) at the Cuatro Siglos de Literatura Cubana international colloquium at the Instituto Cubano del Libro in Havana, Cuba, in November. Jesse Dizard, Anthropology, was nominated to an honorary faculty membership in CSU, Chico’s Phi Eta Sigma national honors society in October 2008. Joe Greene, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and Manufacturing Technology, was named the Outstanding Project Director for 2007 by CSU, Chico. He received a patent for an interlocking modular tubular pallet in Jan. 2008. He presented at the Plastics Technology Center, Chang Ping, China (Dec. 2008); at the 30th Australian Polymer Symposium, Melbourne (Dec. 2008); at the Plastivida of Brazil Conference, Sau Paulo (June 2008); and at the American Oregon Recycling Conference in Portland (June 2008). He co-presented at the SPI Bio-Environmental Polymer Society Conference in October 2008 and at the SPE GPEC 2008 Global Plastics Environmental Conference, in Orlando, Florida, March 2008. Todd Greene, Geological and Environmental Sciences, won the first place Grover E. Murray Award Best Published Paper Award from the Gulf Coast Section of the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists (GCSSEPM) and Gulf Coast Association of Geological Societies (GCAGS) for a paper he was senior author of, “Challenges When Predicting Reservoir Quality in the Subsalt K2/K2 North Field, Green Canyon, Gulf of Mexico,” published in the 2008 GCAGS/GCSSEPM Transactions. Ralph Huntsinger, professor emeritus, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing, gave the keynote speech at the International Conference on System Simulation and Scientific Computing 2008 in Beijing. He was appointed an editor in chief of the new journal of System Simulation, Modeling, and Scientific Computing, published by World Scientific Press, and to the senior editorial advisory board of Simulation: Transactions of the Society for Modeling and Simulation International. Huntsinger is also the group chair for M&S-MTA (Modeling and Simulation-Methodology, Tools, and Software Applications), a major part of the 2009 Summer Computer Simulation Conference to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, in June 2009. He is also a member of the jury for a PhD student at INSA-ROUEN in France. Janja Lalich, Sociology, gave the keynote address, titled “Violent Outcomes of Ideological Extremism: What Have We Learned Since Jonestown?” at the International Cultic Studies Association annual meeting in Philadelphia in June. Greg Liggett, Northern California Natural History Museum, and co-author Gabe Bever from the American Museum of Natural History, presented “The Forgotten Mammoth Site: The Sternberg Elephant Quarry in Lane County, Kansas” at the 68th annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, in October. Clement Luk, Computer Science, delivered an Invited Speech on “Legal Information Technology: Computer’s Role in Decision and Persuasion Support” at the World Congress on Engineering and Computer Science, UC Berkeley, October 2008. Ying Yeh, Music, performed as guest soprano at the Paradise Symphony Orchestra’s 50th anniversary celebration concert Oct. 26. GrantsJoe Greene, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, and Manufacturing Technology, received a $39,000 Agricultural Research Initiative research grant and a $7,500 Rice Research Board research grant, both for “Rice Waste Conversion to Biodegradable Plastics via Bacterial Transformation” in August. He recieved a $90,000 California Coastal Commission grant for “Plastics Flow for Recycled Plastic Containers & Bioplastics in Marine Environment” and a $13,764 UC Berkeley Sustainability Grant for “Plastics Sustainability with UC Berkeley” in November 2008. Ralph Huntsinger, professor emeritus, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing, has received a grant from the China National Science Institute for a four-week visit to give lectures in Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at Beihang University in Beijing March and April 2008. In the NewsMike Bates, Facilities Management and Services, was quoted in the article “California State University Goes Solar,” published Oct. 21 on the Environment News Service. He talked about the CSU, Chico solar partnership with SunEdison. Beau Grosscup, Political Science, was quoted in the Nov. 13 American Reporter (Vol. 14, No. 3,554) article “Insurgent Barbarism—and Ours.” Duane Knudson, Kinesiology, was quoted in “Stretching: The Truth” in the New York Times sports magazine, Play. Scott McNall, Institute for Sustainable Development, was quoted in the Earth First article “Green College Spotlight: California State University at Chico” published on its Web site Sept. 29.
Sarah Pike, Religious Studies, was quoted in the Wall Street Journal article “10 Commandments vs. 7 Aphorisms: A New Religion Covets Legitimacy.”
