Students Participate in National “Tents of Hope” ProjectStudents in Carol Edelman’s Honors section of Genocide and Mass Persuasion participated in the national campaign Tents of Hope to draw attention to the genocide in Darfur. The project is sponsored by the student wing of the Genocide Intervention Network. Students created a tent (one of many unique tents in 350 U.S. cities and in 15 countries) and information tables for three days in October. They encouraged people to sign the 8' by 10' tent, passed out information that they prepared, collected signatures on petitions for the president-elect and the United Nations, and solicited donations for humanitarian aid.
In November, three of the students flew with the tent to Washington, D.C., where it was one of many tents on display at the National Mall Nov. 7–9. The tents will go to Sudan or refugee camps in Chad. For more information on the national project, go to http://www.tentsofhope.org/ —Kathleen McPartland, Public Affairs and Publications |
