Awards and Activities

Ed Bronson, professor emeritus, Political Science, led a panel on “Using Motions to Change Venue, Sever Cases, and Compositional Changes to Achieve Heightened Voir Dire Procedures” at the annual Death Penalty Conference in Monterey in 2008. He is the court-appointed monitor for the consent decree concerning conditions at the Butte County Jail.

Dane A. Cameron, Political Science, has coached two Chico State students, Ashley Reichert and Daniel Thompson, to the National Moot Court Finals for 2008. He has recently completed a multi-year term on the Board of Directors of the National Moot Court Competition.

Becky Cox-White, Philosophy, coached the CSU, Chico team to second place in the California Regional Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, hosted by National Hispanic University, San Jose, December 2008.

Anthony Dunn, Web Application Development, won the Best of Track Award in the Social Applications and Content Track for “It Isn’t About the Feature Set: Selecting a Web Content Management System that Works for You,” presented at the HighEdWeb 2008 conference in October.

Bruce Grelle, Religious Studies, was an invited participant in a conference on “Education for Intercultural Understanding and Dialogue” sponsored by the Danish Foreign Ministry, United Nations, and Organization of the Islamic Conference, October 2008, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Gina Johnston and John McMurtry, Geological and Environmental Sciences, presented “Effects of Varying Precipitation on Trophic state Indicators in a Northern California Water Supply Reservoir” at the North American Lake Management Society Symposium in Lake Louise, Canada, November 2008.

Janja Lalich, Sociology, was listed in Making a Difference: A Selection of Graduate Degree Holders and Their Contributions to the Public Good, a 2008 publication of the Council of Graduate Schools.

Margaret E. Leigey, Political Science, received the 2008 George Herbert Ryden Prize for Best Dissertation in the Social Sciences by the University of Delaware. Her dissertation is titled Life While Serving Life: Examining the Correctional Experiences of Older Life Without Parole Inmates.

Michelle Morris, Nutrition and Food Sciences, presented “Strategies for Junior Faculty Success” at the Ford Foundation Conference of Fellows, National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C., September 2008.

William Murphy, Geological and Environmental Sciences, was a guest lecturer on mining’s toxic legacy Jan. 23, 2009, at the Placer Nature Center in Auburn.

Rick Ostrom, professor emeritus, Political Science, was invited by the editors of the Global Civil Society Yearbook (based at the London School of Economics) to participate in both an exhibition and a panel titled “Voices of Global Civil Society” at the national conference of the International Studies Association, March 2008.

Michael Perelman, Economics, presented “Labor, the Media, and the Current Crisis,” at the Labortech Conference, University of San Francisco, December 2008, and “The Financial Panic, the Causes and the Solution,” a lecture sponsored by the San Francisco Peace and Freedom Party, November 2008.

Sherrow Pinder, Political Science, was awarded an NEH Summer Fellowship to the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research, Harvard University, 2008. She presented “Re-thinking the Welfare State” at the Workfare Policies and Welfare State Legitimacy Conference, University of Bergen, Norway, September 2008, and “The Interconnectedness of Women, Work, and Welfare in the Age of Globalization” at the Southern Political Science Association Meeting, January 2008.

Char Prieto, Foreign Languages and Literatures, presented “The Spanish Civil War, Race and the McCarthy Era in the Poetry of Langston Hughes” at the Modern Language Association in San Francisco, December 2008.

Diane E. Schmidt, Political Science, presented the co-authored “Variation Among Regions of Unfair Labor Practice Charges: How Much and Why” at the Policy History Conference in St. Louis, May 29–June 1, 2008, and “Power Points for All Learners: Making Accessible PowerPoint Presentations” at the Annual American Political Science Association Teaching and Learning Conference in San Francisco, February 2008.

Charles Turner, Political Science, presented “Political Assassination in Popular Fiction and Political Thought: Trotsky, Arendt, and Stephen King” at the American Political Science Association Annual Meeting in Boston, August 2008.

Michael Perelman, Economics, was interviewed on the Internet television show Realnews, on the KZFR Chico radio show The Point Is, and on the KPFA Berkeley radio show Livingroom in October 2008. He was also interviewed on Ian Masters’ Background Briefing, a KPFK Los Angeles radio show in September 2008.

Emilyn Sheffield, Recreation and Parks Management, was interviewed for the article “Honorable Ambassador from Nature-Land” published Jan. 9, 2009, on the Miller-McCune Web site.
