Her Excellency Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi

Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi will be the Commencement speaker for both ceremonies, on May 23 and 24, and will receive an honorary doctorate from CSU, Chico. She holds a 1981 bachelor’s degree in computer science and an Executive MBA from the American University of Sharjah. During her time as a student at Chico State, she was president of the Computer Science Honor Society, Eta Kappa Nu, and was a leader on various student committees.

She was one of the first women in the United Arab Emirates to obtain a technology degree and to serve as the managing director of a premier electronic business. She is currently the United Arab Emirates Minister of Foreign Trade.

Sheikha Lubna is a member of the royal family of the emirate of Sharjah, one of the seven emirates that comprise the United Arab Emirates.

She is a member of the Board of Directors of Tejari.com; the Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry; Emirates Foundation; Abu Dhabi; and the Arab International Women’s Forum. She is also a member of the Board of Trustees for Dubai University and the Dubai Autism Center. She serves as a trustee for Zayed University, the American Graduate School of International Management and Total Quality Management College in Dubai. She volunteers for the Friends of Cancer Patients Society.

Forbes Magazine named Sheikha Lubna as one of their “100 Most Powerful Women in the World,” and she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. She lectures throughout the world on global economic issues and about her unique experience and perspective on gender issues and equality.

Sheikha Lubna views her position in the world as one of great responsibility. She has dedicated her life to “working for a day when gender or nationality doesn’t matter—the first step toward truly achieving peace.”
