Up Front

A Slight Remodel

The bad news? Only four issues of Inside Chico State per semester, due to budget cuts. The good news? Having fewer issues provided the impetus to redesign ICS to use space more creatively.

Our relatively new designer, Gail Vanderhoof, created the new masthead, emphasizing the “Inside” of Inside Chico State, because that is the intent of the publication. People seem to have trouble remembering our name, and maybe that’s because the old masthead emphasized “Chico.”

Now more stories begin on the front page. That gives us more chance to pique your interest. It does mean you need to jump from the front page to an inside page more often—but really, there are only four pages.

For the first time, we will also add certain items, such as lists, important information that takes up much space, and supplemental information to the Web edition of ICS. For example, in this issue, you will be directed to a list of last spring’s retirees, which will appear only in the Web edition of ICS.

Another consequence of a reduced budget is that we won’t have money for freelance writers. That means we will rely on you more than ever to send us detailed information about news and events of interest to campus readers. This is an invitation to let us know about your current project or of good work in your area. If you have any questions about how you can contribute to ICS, please contact Kathleen McPartland at x4260.

A big change on the back page is that we aren’t going to print a complete calendar. We will print as many upcoming events as we can under “Events,” and then direct people to Chico Today, the online calendar. We will still highlight as many School of the Arts and Chico Performances events as we have room for.

Keep sending information about your events—the goal is to have as complete a calendar as possible in Chico Today. We hope you find the new look interesting and the new format helpful. Please let us know what you think. Send your comments to kmcpartland@ csuchico.edu.
