Shirley Rabo Is the 2009 Staff Employee of the Year

Shirley Rabo, the 2009 Outstanding Staff Employee of the Year, has been a member of the campus community for 31 years. During those years, Shirley has had a tremendous impact on those with whom she works, both on and off campus.

Some comments which co-workers and members of staff council use to describe Shirley include:

  • “...vast knowledge of the campus and its history and readily shares her knowledge.”
  • “warm and caring with extremely high standards for her own personal conduct.”
  • “loyal, hard-working em- ployee and has the best interests of the University at heart.”

Shirley joined the campus community in April 1978, hired as the Staff Council office manager, now the administrative support coordinator. Her contacts are many, including students, faculty, staff, administrators, retirees, and community members. Shirley works tirelessly with the standing committee chairs in coordinating all projects handled through Staff Council, such as the University’s Needy Children Program, the Staff and Faculty Art Show, and the Staff Awards Luncheon. She also created and maintains the new user-friendly Staff Council Web site.

Shirley has worked under 18 Staff Council chairs! She helps train the new executive board and chairs on matters pertaining to parliamentary procedures and campus policies and aids in the smooth transition of each new member to Staff Council. She is a wizard with the various funds she must handle and manages a solid database for the recognition of service years for our honorees each year. Shirley is also our campus liaison between BloodSource and the University, coordinating all reservations and communications.

Shirley is extremely conscientious and professional in all the work she conducts with the many units on campus and in the community. She is highly detail-oriented, kind, sensitive, practical, positive, and positively a team player. Her sense of humor is remarkable and well appreciated, and “her ability to laugh with others through hectic times” is one of her dearest characteristics. Shirley is appropriately referred to as “the anchorwoman” of Staff Council and performs her duties with exemplary quality.

“I am so honored to be the recipient of this award. I am privileged to be part of a team which gives its all to the betterment of campus and to call these individuals ‘friend’ as well as colleague,” said Rabo.
