Join Timothy Herman and Caren Levine for an evening of music and fun benefiting musical theatre and the Department of Music's accompanying programs at CSU, Chico. The hot and humorous cabaret act, Cigarettes and Caffeine, focusing on social commentary and witty satire, will be performed on February 4 and 5 at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. in the Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall, PAC 134.

Levine, a former Julliard student and now a Department of Music faculty member, commands the stage with her piano virtuosity and quick-witted humor. Levine made her Carnegie Hall debut in 1996 and will return to New York this spring to perform in a solo recital. Her most recent award was Maryland's Munz-Chopin Piano Competition, and she was named the Artists International Competition winner earlier this year.

Herman, who directs musical theatre for the Department of Music, has a long list of musical productions to his credit as both director and performer, including off-Broadway. He has an M.F.A. in directing from Florida State University. Herman taught an introduction to theatre class as part of an internship in London before coming to Chico.

Herman said, "The title of the cabaret has to do with vices and what it takes to get through the day. Some songs are funny, some are sad. Some songs offer social commentary about life in general and about life specifically here at the university."

Because of the anticipated popularity of the show, there will be two performances each evening, one for a general audience at 7:30 and another recommended for mature audiences at 9:30. Tickets are available at the university box office, x5791. -- JL
