San Francisco Opera Singers

The San Francisco Opera Center Singers will send chills through your body with their powerful, demanding, and sensual operatic voices. When they belt out some of Broadway's best show tunes and classic opera excerpts, the listener is guaranteed an impressive performance.

On March 2, an evening of Grand Opera and Broadway Classics will be performed jointly by the San Francisco Opera Center Singers, the Merola Opera Program, and Adler Fellowship singers. Together they will present music ranging from Leonard Bernstein's classic West Side Story to Mozart, Verdi, Handel, Strauss and Stravinsky.

Opera Center participants are chosen through nationwide and international auditions. Tenor Hong Shen Li, CSU, Chico music professor, is a past member of the touring program. Selection is an honor, and Li found the experience to be "important to his professional career."

Chico's Opera Workshop Director Ying Yeh will join with the singers to conduct a lecture/demonstration open to the public earlier in the day (10 a.m., PAC 132). Yeh said that the singers will meet with her students to coach diction and demonstrate interpretation, vocal technique, and acting. "The students' interaction with professionals near their own ages generates enthusiasm and intensifies the learning atmosphere," said Yeh.
