KCHO Commentary Wins Award

CSU, Chico's Northstate Public Radio has won a prestigious award for a news commentary on education by KCHO/KFPR News Director Todd Thornton.

The Associated Press Television and Radio Association of California and Nevada named Thornton's piece Best Editorial or News Commentary of 1999. No other TV or radio station in the Northstate region has won an APTRA award over the past five years.

Thornton's commentary addressed the need for California students to be better educated about the workings of state government. He reflected on his experience teaching a class, where none of his students could name both houses of the state legislature. The piece aired on KCHO/KFPR as well as the statewide California Report program.

Thornton will accept the award for KCHO/KFPR at the fifty-third annual APTRA annual convention in Anaheim March 25.

The commentary competed against entries from commercial radio stations outside the major cities in the two states, plus college-based stations throughout California and Nevada.

Thornton has been news director at KCHO/KFPR since October 1996. He is the only full-time news staff member at the station. He also teaches broadcast journalism classes in CSU, Chico's journalism department. -- HLW
