Bartholomew Honored with Industry's Highest AwardStuart Bartholomew (Bart), Construction Management, was recently honored as the Year 2000 recipient of the Golden Beaver Award for outstanding achievement in heavy engineering construction. The Beavers, a national construction industry group, recognizes excellence in highway, bridge, lock, dam, tunnel, rapid transit, and other civil construction projects. Many of the people who worked with Bartholomew were among the 2400 guests at the Century Plaza in San Francisco where he was presented with this prestigious award. George Williamson, vice president of Traylor Brothers, one of the largest construction companies in the U.S., said, "When I first graduated from college, Bart was my boss and mentor. He taught me things I still use today." Bartholomew joined the CSU, Chico faculty in 1984 after a forty-year career in the construction industry. "Bart has brought a great deal of visibility and credibility to the construction management program," said Bruce Yoakum, acting chair. Bartholomew earned his degree in civil engineering in 1948 from Berkeley. He was then hired as the field engineer for the Bull Shoals Dam in Arkansas. After receiving his master's degree from Berkeley in 1951, he worked on the Bakhra Dam in India, a large hydroelectric project in Pakistan, and mining projects in Australia. He returned to the U.S. in 1968 and was involved in the construction of BART, subway tunnels in several major cities, and bridge contracts. He started his own consulting firm in 1983 and has served on twenty-two dispute resolution boards, technical review board, and peer review boards. He was a founding member of the Dispute Resolution Board. "I am very proud of the fact that boards I have served on have submitted recommendations for over fifty complicated disputes, and in every case the position of the board was unanimous," said Bartholomew during his award acceptance speech. Bartholomew's wife, Margaret, and his seven children were also present at the celebration of his fifty years of contributions to the industry. -- JL
