Three Receive International Development Awards
The University Studies Abroad Consortium has awarded three CSU, Chico faculty with grants to study abroad. Lisa Churchill, Special Studies in Education, Celeste Jones, and Kathy Kaiser, Sociology and Social Work, will travel to host countries, study the language with students, and help expand the role of Chico students in the studies abroad program when they return. Churchill will spend the month of June in San Sebastian, Spain, studying Spanish and the art, culture, and architecture of the region. She is planning short trips to the French and Spanish Basque country, medieval cities, the Roman town of Segovia, as well as Madrid and Pamplona. Jones will investigate Italian universities seeking to arrange social work exchange opportunities such as the department's current program with Norway. She will also augment her research in domestic violence and trauma debriefing methods, and determine how Italy addresses these issues through policy, legal services, and service delivery. "It is critical that we teach students to think beyond our own culture," said Jones. "Having the opportunity to learn the language will complement the investigation of these connections." Kaiser plans to travel to Heredia, Costa Rica, for the month of August to study Spanish and ecology. She hopes to expand the department's role in ecology studies by visiting a country with extensive ecotourism and a solid, ecology-based economy. -- JL
