College of BSS Welcomes New Dean

Jeanne L. Thomas, former dean of the College of Health and Human Services at Southwest Missouri State University, has been named dean of the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.

Walt Schafer, professor of sociology, has been interim dean of the college since July 1999.

Thomas started as dean at Southwest Missouri State in 1996. Prior to that, she was associate vice chancellor for planning, budget, and resource allocation at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for two years. She was a member of the psychology department at Wisconsin-Parkside for 13 years, including three years as department chair.

"Dr. Thomas comes to us with a strong academic background in psychology and a strong and diverse administrative background," said Scott McNall, provost and vice president for academic affairs. "We are delighted to be able to attract someone of her energy, talent, and enthusiasm. We know she will provide distinguished leadership for the college."

"I am tremendously excited about joining CSU, Chico," said Thomas. "I have been impressed with the caliber of administrators and faculty members that I have met on campus, as well as what I have seen of the community. There is enormous potential to develop the already strong academic programs in the college, as well as to build additional bridges between those programs and the community."

Thomas received her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from West Virginia University in 1982. She earned her master's degree from West Virginia and her bachelor's degree from Kenyon College.

Thomas has published extensively on issues related to gender and aging, and is the author of Adulthood and Aging, published in 1992 by Allyn & Bacon. -- JW
