Bowman to Open Early Music SeriesRobert Bowman will open the new Early Music Series with J.S. Bach's immortal Goldberg Variations, performed on the Centennial Pipe Organ on August 27 at 3 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre. "Not only am I excited about performing one of the great monuments of Western classical music and also one of the greatest sets of variations ever written, I am thrilled to be performing once again on the magnificent Centennial Pipe Organ," said Bowman. This work was written for Bach's student Johann Gottlieb Goldberg to help entertain Count Kayserling, the Russian Ambassador to Dresden, during long sleepless nights. Bowman said Bach was "paid handsomely" for the piece, which proved to be one of his most profitable commissions. "The Count was so pleased with the result and became so identified with the music that when requesting Goldberg to perform them he affectionately would ask for 'his' Variations." Written initially for harpsichord, this unique performance will also explore the coloristic capabilities of the organ in projecting the monumental structure and emotional depth of this work. Bowman said Goldberg Variations is one of his favorite pieces. "I enjoy performing it on piano, harpsichord, as well as organ. Each instrument provides the potential for unique expressive capabilities. I am very excited about performing the work on the organ because it provides a greater range of volume, dynamics, and colors." Bowman will talk during the concert about the structural, emotional, and historical significance of the music. See calendar for additional information. -- UPE
