Naughty Marietta, directed by Pat Kopp, will be presented in Laxson Auditorium on September 13 and will run through Sunday, September17. The musical is based on the 1910 operetta by Victor Herbert and is the second of three operettas to be produced by Humanties and Fine Arts and Chico Performances supported by local benefactor Marilyn Warrens.

Naughty Marietta is the story of a countess who flees to America aboard a ship full of Casquette girls, so named for the small boxes of credentials carried by these potential brides for the colonists. Hiding her true identity under the name of Marietta, the countess invents a questionable past to avoid marriage. Strong musical numbers carry the story through a love affair and the hunt for Marietta by her family and fiance in Europe. The operetta features "Ah, Sweet Mystery of Life," "Italian Street Song," and "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, Tramp."

"Naughty Marietta will recapture the nineteenth-century style of production using the knowledge and techniques of the twenty-first century," said Kopp. Using the latest computer technology, Marty Gilbert, School of the Arts, has created detailed sets reminiscent of the early 1800s in New Orleans.}UPE
