Take a SPIN & Get Some SMARTS
One of the services provided by the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is collecting and disbursing information about funding opportunities and proposal submission deadlines. While it might appear that we somehow magically acquire that information, the reality is most of it comes to us through subscription services, some of which are free (NSF's Custom News Service) and others for which we pay a fee (Sponsored Programs Information System, or SPIN). The majority of information sent from our office to faculty and staff comes to us from a subcategory of SPIN called the SPIN Matching and Researcher Transmittal System (SMARTS).
SMARTS is an electronic matching and funding opportunity notification system that provides investigators with a direct and targeted electronic link to comprehensive current research funding information. The investigator profile information is collected via forms on InfoEd's system and used at InfoEd for matching with the SPIN database. These two data sources interact so that matchmaking is conducted daily. "Matched" programs are then automatically e-mailed daily to individual researchers.
All of these services are available directly to faculty and staff. The advantage of going to the SMARTS site and entering your own keywords is that the information received via e-mail is targeted specifically to your individual interests. While OSP's information specialist has to guess what might spark a research or service project, faculty or staff members already know.
The service is automatic and individualized with current and comprehensive information.
For more information on linking into SPIN, SMARTS, and GENIUS, visit the OSP Web site at www.csuchico.edu/gisp/sp.html where you will find direct links to SPIN. If you would like individual instruction on SMARTS registration or how to run a periodic search of the SPIN database, please contact Fawn Sutherland in OSP, x5026. She will be happy to conduct individual or small-group sessions with faculty and staff interested in receiving on-going funding information.
The electronic information age is here. Join us in using it to find funding for your research. Imagine the possibilities!
