CELT Conference Begins Today

The sixth annual Conference on Excellence in Learning and Teaching begins today, Thursday, September 21, and runs through Friday, September 22.

The conference, sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, will draw together 300 educators from K-12, community colleges, and the university. A variety of workshops focusing on student-centered learning will explore ways to create high-quality learning environments.

This year's conference features a library open house and several off-campus presenters, including Emily Decker from Evergreen State College, Alfredo Konuwa and Peggy Mitchell from Butte College, and Tom Blodgett of Butte and Shasta community colleges.

Highlighting the conference are two mini-lectures beginning at 1 pm on Friday by CSU, Chico's 1999-2000 Outstanding Teacher, Cris Guenter, and Outstanding Adviser, Bruce Bechtol. These lectures will be held in PAC 134 and are open to the public.

The workshops cover such titles as "Online Paper Mills and Plagiarism," "Tapping into Synergy: Using Cooperative Group Learning to Enhance Instruction," and "Global Warming -- A Semester in Review of an Integrated, Problem-Based Science Course."

"The annual conference provides opportunities for teachers from the community and university faculty, staff, and students to learn more about the nature of learning and teaching from each other," said Marilyn Winzenz, director of CELT. "It is a time for experiencing new ideas and new people -- to be inspired and re-energized by our colleagues."

Complete information about the conference can be found on the CELT Conference Web page at www.csuchico.edu/celt/. The Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at 530-898-6101 can also answer questions about registration.
