Child Development Lab to Hold ReunionThe Child Development Lab (CDL) is holding a reunion and open house on Saturday, October 14, from 4-6 pm on the south lawn of Modoc Hall. All of the alumni, parents, and former preschoolers who have benefited from the program over the years are invited to the celebration. CDL officially came into existence under the direction of Barbara Mahler in 1973. Prior to that time, there was a preschool program in the Department of Home Economics. Mahler wrote the child development interdisciplinary major in 1970. The lab is now nationally accredited by the National Association of Early Childhood Education, one of the first child development lab schools to be so recognized. The Child Development Program, coordinated by Sandra Machida, and the lab, directed by Cynthia Ratekin, provide an opportunity for ongoing research in the area of child development. The event will also intro- duce the Child Development Program's fundraising campaign, A Window to Their World. The goal of the campaign is to raise money for badly needed updating of the lab, which has been essentially untouched since its opening nearly 30 years ago. The major needs are improvements and repairs of the exterior play area, updating the sound system, acquiring new playroom equipment, and improving safety features to meet new industry standards.
