The Alphabet Versus the Goddess

Leonard Shlain
Leonard Shlain

Leonard Shlain, author of The Alphabet Versus the Goddess: The Conflict between Word and Image and Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time, and Light, will give a free lecture Thursday, October 12, 2000 at 7 pm in PAC 134.

In The Alphabet Versus the Goddess, Shlain claims that the development of literacy fundamentally reconfigured the human brain. Making connections between brain function and language, art, and culture, Dr. Shlain, chair of laparoscopic surgery at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, presents his theory that preliterate cultures were principally informed by holistic, right-brain modes and that writing drove cultures toward linear, left-brain thinking.

The Humanities Center, HFA, CELT, the School of Graduate, International, and Sponsored Programs, and the Departments of English and Anthropology sponsor Shlain's lecture. He will also facilitate a faculty workshop (by reservation) 9:30-11 am , University Center. For information, call Rob Burton, director of the Humanities Center, at 898-6568.
