Homecoming 2000Gorbachev Visit Moved to October 8 Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev's visit to Chico has been moved from October 11 to Sunday, October 8, 7:30 pm in Laxson Auditorium. All of the events surrounding the visit will remain the same. As president and founder of Green Cross International, the former Soviet Union President and Nobel Peace Prize winner will discuss peace in the twenty-first century, international leadership, restructuring global priorities, and creating a global ecological law. Gorbachev is best known for his role in ending the Cold War and opening the Soviet Union through pere-stroika and glasnost. He served as president of the former Soviet Union from 1990 to 1991 and president of the presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR from 1985 to 1990. Gorbachev's visit to CSU, Chico marks the fourth Nobel Peace Prize winner within three years to speak as part of the President's Lecture Series. If you are a ticket holder and would like more information on the date change, call Chico Performances at 898-5791. In 1973, the university sponsored a semester-long festival of the future -- Circa 2000. Bob Jackson, now the dean, School of Graduate, International, and Sponsored Programs, coordinated the activities addressing cul-tural, social, economic, and technological changes that could be expected in the year 2000. A time capsule was created and sealed, containing items and writings representative of that period. It is now time to open the time capsule. Jackson says, "I can't believe that 27 years have passed! Faculty and studetns who were involved and anyone interested in travelling back to the future with us is invited to the time capsule opening." The time capsule will be opened on Saturday, October 14, 3 pm, at the camellia garden along the creek near Holt Hall. A lunch will be held in Nettleton Stadium. Tickets are $8.95 and available through the box office, 898-5791. For information about the many other homecoming activities, visit the Homecoming Web site at: www.csuchico.edu/alm/homecoming.html |
