Circa 2000 Capsule Survives IntactThe Circa 2000 steel barrel covered in fiberglass survived 27 years with its contents dry -- even down to the cigarettes and woven bag, the Time and Oui magazines, and the photos and letters placed there by students. Bob Jackson conceived of the year-long program in 1973 that featured futurists Alvin Toffler and Arthur C. Clark and ecologist Barry Commoner. As part of the program, Jackson, in collaboration with Hans Daumer, now retired, and Doug Alexander, Biology, taught a one-unit class in which students talked about the defining characteristics of their own era and gathered objects that would represent it. Among the large audience at the October 14 opening were, from left, Jackson, Daumer, and alumni from the 1973 class.
