Native Roots, an exhibition of Native California art, is showing in Trinity Hall 100 until January 26. At that time, it will move to the 24-hour Drive-by Gallery on Seventh Street, between Broadway and Normal.

Daraxa Mattice, Maidu and Tolowa from Crescent City, is a CSU, Chico student and the curator of the show. She and her mother, Junie Mattice, one of the artists in the show, wanted to show the art of native Northern California peoples: Maidu, Yurok, Tolowa, and Pomo, and as well as work from a Lakota artist living in Northern California.

It is an art that is contemporary, yet uses cultural references and images. "We wanted to show the authentic work being produced today that is authentic and unique -- not the art that has become the stereotype of native Southwest and Plains peoples," said Daraxa.

All of the artists in the show are from California. The art includes images of traditional dance, California tribal design, and artifacts characteristic of California tribes. One of the pieces, for example, is a carving of a redwood dugout boat traditionally used by Northern California tribes (Yurok, Karuk, Tolowa, Hoopa peoples) by George Blake who lives on the Hoopa Reservation.

Junie Mattice from Crescent City calls herself a "vortex expressionist." She deals in abstract images of essential native themes. Her painting ...and they promised us honor and truth and gave us lies and deceit is one of two pieces she has in the show.
