CAVE received $64,000 through an "educational award" program in cooperation with Washington Campus Compact to support and encourage service activities of higher education students. The purpose of the AmeriCorps program is to provide resources to meet critical community needs as defined by the local community. Nan Timmons, executive director of CAVE, worked with Washington Compact to arrange the program and find placements for students. The kind of service-based activity required by Campus Compact is exactly the kind of activity that already exists for Cave volunteers and other students involved in service-based learning. "What this means for Chico," said Timmons, "is that we did not have to create new programs. We just had to find the students in CAVE and other campus programs who would qualify for these awards." Thirty-one students from Cave and other programs are participating in the program now, and Timmons has requested 50 slots for next year. For their volunteer activities, students receive an AmeriCorps Education award of from $1,181 to $2,362 that they can apply to their continuing education. The awards carry the following stipulations: students have seven years within which to use the funds; the awards come in the form of an educational voucher; funds can be used to pay educational expenses or to repay student loans; they can be used at any college, university, or community college; it is taxable income; it does not affect financial aid. If you would like more information about possibilities for students participating in service-learning projects in which you are involved, contact Nan Timmons at x5817. |
