ScholarshipsWe will regularly list upcoming scholarships in this column. In 1999, Edith Kingdon established an endowed scholarship for re-entry students at CSU, Chico with a generous gift of $20,000. This last fall, Kingdon met the first scholarship recipient. She was so enamored with this student and the thought that she could help other students reach their academic goals that she decided to make another donation. In December 2000, she gave another $10,000 to the Richard and Edith Kingdon Scholarship. This scholarship is available to any re-entry student in good academic standing and with financial need. Alain Smith attended CSU, Chico in the early 1970s and was a member of the soccer team. Smith wanted to establish a scholarship at his alma mater for two reasons: he wanted to help other soccer players, and he wanted to pay tribute to his father, who inspired him. Smith created the Joseph Smith Soccer Scholarship as a Christmas present for his father, donating $25,000 to create the endowment. This award honors the accomplishments of his father in the field of soccer and will help attract and retain outstanding soccer players in the future. Mary Ruby, distinguished emeritus faculty member, Physical Education and Exercise Science, has helped the Beverly Wadsworth Memorial Scholarship reach endowment status. Ruby provided a gift in December that enables us to make the first award to a student in Wadsworth's name for the next academic year. Wadsworth taught in Physical Education with Ruby. The award pays tribute to her friend while helping a student majoring in Physical Education and Exercise Science. Diana R. Walker, |
