Literary Critic Roger Shattuck VisitsThe Humanities Center is pleased to announce that Roger Shattuck, a highly regarded literary critic, translator, and scholar, will be one of its principal guest speakers for spring semester 2001. Professor Shattuck will deliver a public lecture titled "Are There Books Everyone Should Read?" on February 20 in PAC 144 at 7 p.m. The lecture will be followed by a reception in the Humanities Center in Trinity 100 and 126. During the day, he will conduct a seminar/discussion for interested faculty and students based on selected essays from his most recent book, Candor and Perversion: Literature, Education and the Arts, in Trinity 126, 2Ð4 p.m. A limited number of free copies of this book will be available for those interested in attending. Please contact Laird Easton for information on how to obtain a copy. Professor Shattuck's writings have covered a wide range of historical and philosophical topics. He won the National Book Award in 1975 for his study of Marcel Proust and this last year published Proust's Way: A Field Guide to In Search of Lost Time, summarizing the scholarship that has made him the leading authority on the great French writer. His pioneering book on modernism and the French intelligentsia, The Banquet Years: The Origins of the Avant-Garde in France, 1885 to World War One, is a classic that has been in print for over 40 years. Shattuck is also the author of The Forbidden Experiment: The Story of the Wild Boy of Aveyron, which focuses on early efforts to understand human nature and psychological development. In Forbidden Knowledge: From Prometheus to Pornography, Shattuck considers the moral obligations of art and knowledge and explores whether, in some cases, the pursuit of knowledge should be tempered with restraint. A prominent public intellectual whose essays appear regularly in national media such as The New York Review of Books and The Atlantic Monthly, Shattuck has in recent years established himself as a thoughtful and trenchant critic of postmodernist literary theory Contact Laird Easton by e-mail or phone at x4284 for more information. |
