Opera The Bartered Bride ComingIt happens only once every two years, and it is about to happen again! Every other year CSU, Chico's Opera Workshop and the Departments of Theatre Arts and Music pull out all the stops and present a grand-scale, full-length opera production complete with orchestral accompaniment, beautiful costumes, a lavish set, and, of course, talented student and community singers. Opera Workshop director Ying Yeh has chosen the perfect opera to coincide with Valentine's Day week -- a production of Czech composer Bedrich Smetana's romantic opera, The Bartered Bride, presented February 15 - 17 at 7:30 p.m. and February 18 at 2 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre. The Bartered Bride, set in the 1800s, is a love story about the courtship of Jen”k and Marenka. The opera's cast of characters includes interfering parents, meddling in-laws, and a loutish half-brother. The Bartered Bride has been described as a rich mixture of Czech folk music, dance, and humor that paints a picture of village life in nineteenth-century Bohemia. The Bartered Bride will feature costumes designed by Gail Holbrook, musical accompaniment from the Chico Symphony Orchestra directed by Kyle Wiley Pickett, and a set designed by Marty Gilbert, HFA.
