Vigil for PeaceTuesday, September 18, more than 400 people, mostly students, gathered in the Free Speech Area for a candlelight walk to the downtown plaza to commemorate victims of the terrorist attacks and to focus on peaceful solutions. The event had a tense beginning when political science Professor George Wright attempted to voice his political analysis of the attack. He was quieted by protests from some in the crowd who wished to focus only on the victims. Our Campus Speaks Out Day of Remembrance Ceremony Hold sorrow in your heart, not hateLive each day and grow
strong. The greatest attack against terrorism is to create peace. Our greatest strength is diversity. We must embrace the diversity
of this country. I recall lines from a Christmas Oratorio: If we knew that tomorrow
the world would come to an end, wed be jarred and our hearts unfrozen.
Do something different from this day on. Help the homeless, volunteer,
find a way to make the world a better place. Know that each of you is
an agent for good in the world. Force on force will not change their hearts. Acts of barbarism
against Muslims are an aberration of everything we stand for. All of the
major religions have had holy wars we look back on with regret. |
